Ikat Rug

This finely hand knotted pile carpet is made with natural dyes and handspun wool from the Karakul sheep. The Karakul is the oldest breed of sheep in the world and is considered to have the highest quality wool available. This rug comes from a project employing Hazara Afghan as well as Turkmen weavers. Weaving takes place in the North of Afghanistan in individual weavers’ homes. This piece is woven with a beautifully drawn Ikat design that requires a higher knot count of about 200kpi. The colors the wool and the refined design in this rug are sublime. These are the very nicest rugs being made in Afghanistan (or anywhere) today!
