Hand knotted pile rug made with handspun wool and natural dyes. In Persian, gabbeh means unclipped; an apt description for these thick, whimsical gems of tribal art. Their thick wool made for ideal insulation against the desert whose temperatures fluctuate from extreme hot and cold. Earlier iterations of these rugs were rather primitive and naïve. However, as these rugs became popular in the last decades, they have grown in sophistication and range of design. Originally these rugs were made primarily by the Qashqai and Luri tribes. Today, however, these rugs are made in many countries. They are a wonderful and whimsical treats for the feet and a feast for the eyes.
